Trip to San Fran
I will be visiting San Francisco, the last week of March, for my Birthday. Can you all give me advise on Do's or Don'ts for Hotels and things to do while there.

If you want a hotel that's close to the leather bars, stay at the Best Western Civic Center. It's right around the corner from the Lone Star and a short walk to Market Street, and from there you can take public transportation pretty much everywhere you want to go.

Things I enjoyed:

Alcatraz (Pier 33) - Buy your ticket online. This was the highlight of the trip, the audio tour is included and it's fantastic. Very engaging, and you get great views of the city and the Golden Gate Bridge.

Sea Lions (Pier 39) - I could have watched them for hours.

Musee Mecanique (Per 45) - Interesting collection of old mechanical arcade amusements -- some of them are downright bizarre.

SFMOMA - Always wonderful and interesting exhibits. Easy walk from BW Civic Center.

Cartoon Art Museum - small museum, great exhibits. Easy walk from BW Civic Center, right around the corner from SFMOMA.

Sunset Park - You can get here by bus. Wonderful views.

Marina - You might have to take a cab here, but the view of the Golden Gate Bridge is great. The Palace of Fine Arts, left over from the 1915 World's Fair, is a short walk from here.

As far as hotels go, I recommend staying in the financial district right now. With Business travel being way down, you can stay in some really nice hotels, in a location that is convenient to everything. Do not stay near Fisherman's Wharf, as it is far away from everything else, and super touristy. Actaully, unless you like tourist crap, you might want to skip Fisherman's Wharf.

There are a ton of things I recommend, from Amoeba Records in the Haight, to the Farmer's Market @ the Ferry Building on Saturday morning.

Geoff gives good advice here - you could stay at a cheapy hotel - but why when you might score an amazing room in a classy hotel? Priceline is your friend. and transit in SF is pretty amazing and cabs aren't all that expensive if you'd rather not.

For March '09 in SF?

J. Mayer at SF MOMA

and rent a car or take a bus tour and visit Muir Woods

DEFINITELY explore the stairway walks and gardens of Telegraph Hill. It's one of my favorite places! :-)
